Maureen VanWormer-Westburg began creating the breed in the late 1980's right here in the USA. Once the 'foundation' stock was developed, the Mi-Ki was BORN. Breeders have been breeding Mi-Ki to Mi-Ki every since the early 1990's.
Maureen also went by the nickname of Micky Macklin. That is where the breed name Mi-Ki (pronounced Mee-Kee) originated from. Micky began with a hand full of pure bred dogs that had qualities that she wanted in a single breed. The Mi-Ki's heritage comes from the Papillion, Japanese Chin, and Maltese. Maureen purposely bred for a non-shedding, hypo-allergenic coat. The Mi-Ki actually has rooted hair and not fur. This makes them a GREAT choice for people with allergies. Mi-Kis also do not have dander, which makes a dog 'smell like a dog'. Gotta love that! A dog that doesn't smell like one!
They are an outgoing toy sized, companion dog, with a larger than life personality. They usually range between 3 and 8 (ours range 3 to 5) pounds as adults and they are sooo very calm and affectionate! I believe that once you have a Mi-Ki, you'll never want another breed! They are a priceless and cherished dog to the handful of people that are so blessed to own one.
The Mi-Ki is a non-yappy, quiet, yet playful, with almost cat like agility and mannerisms. It's cute to see them pounce on their toys and swat at things! They are a riot to watch!
Friendly, calm, adaptable, cuddly and comical creatures are some of the ways you could describe a Mi-Ki. They love to travel and are remarkably well mannered, even as puppies. The fact that they are extremely intelligent, lends to their ability to learn fast. We do not train our pups on Piddle pads or Wee Wee pads as throw rugs or anything soft laying on the becomes a piddle pad for a puppy.
This breed loves children and gets along well with other animals. Their personalities are just spectacular. It is hard to believe that one breed can truly have so many wonderful qualities, but it is TRUE!
I call the Mi-Ki the
AMERICAN DREAM DOG!
It is everything that I dreamed of in a lap dog. ...it truly is!
