What is a Mi-Ki?
A Mi-Ki is a small, rare, toy breed Dog. That comes in two coat variations, long coat and smooth (shorter) coat. The smooth coat Mi-Ki looks similar to a long haired Chihuahua. They do not have long hair on their head, face or muzzle. The Mi-Ki gets a large percentage of their heritage from the Maltese and Shih Tzu. Many other breeders also believe the Papillion and Japanese Chin is in the breed. I can not say for sure. Therefore, I look forward to the scientists who developed the Wisdom Panel test to reveal the results.
Mi-Kis have little to no shedding because they are a single coated dog. Therefore, they are more hypo allergenic than dogs with double coats. Dogs with double coats are also known to shed. Although Mi-Kis can bark, they are not yappy. If they are socialized properly, they are good with children and other animals too. They are quiet, calm and they love to travel. Mi-Kis are very intelligent dogs which makes them easy to train. A Mi-Ki is luxury on a leash, the ultimate lap dog. You won't find a Toy breed better than a Mi-Ki. They are the best of the best, the Couture of Toy companion breeds, the ultimate in luxury when it comes to small dogs. The Mi-Ki is a purebred dog and not a designer dog. Occasionally, a Mi-Ki is referred to as a "designer dog", such as a Labradoodle, Peke-a-poo, Chi-poms, etc. However, a designer dog is a result of mating 2 different breeds, usually a first generation mix. Stud books beginning in 1992 have recorded pedigrees for over 8 generations of Mi-Ki to Mi-Ki breeding. Three criterias are required to define a breed: (1) ancestry can be traced by pedigree back to the foundation stock, (2) breed is created for a specific purpose and (3) physical appearance described in a breed standard. The Mi-Ki meets all three of these requirements. The Mi-Ki are published in the 6th Edition of the
World Atlas of Dog Breeds by Dominique De Vito. It was released May of 2009. It can be purchased at Amazon.com
How Much Does a genuine Mi-Ki Cost?
The price of a genuine Mi-Ki can vary depending on age, gender, size and if it is sold as breedable. For example, a retired adult would be the least expensive. A breedable/show quality female is the most expensive. In general, males are less expensive because there are more males born than females. Also, the demand for females is greater. Some breeders charge more for their smaller Mi-Kis because there is a greater demand for small dogs. We have small dogs that have small puppies and do not charge based on size. For MiKi puppy prices, please call Denise at (574-534-4415) or email (sofinemikis@yahoo.com). We are usually quick to reply. All prices quoted are pet prices only.
What Will My Puppy Weigh Full Grown?
Most of our MiKi puppies mature to be between 3 1/2 to 6 pounds as adults. The breed standard is 4 to 8 pounds. It's not uncommon to see breeders with adult Mi-Kis well over 10 pounds. We do not breed for teeny tiny babies. All of our breedable dogs are within the standard. We also never guarantee what size your puppy will be as an adult. A good rule of thumb is to double the puppy's weight at 12 weeks. This will give an approximate adult weight.
What Colors Do Mi-Kis Come In?
Mi Kis come in all colors. Most, but not all Mi-Kis, will change color by the time they are a year old, then again around two years of age. It's nearly impossible to know which puppies will keep their color and which ones will change color. It is natural to choose a puppy by its "cute" looks. However, once you get to know a puppy... their sweet, fun loving personalities shine through and you love them for who they are. If their color does happen to change, it's likely you will not notice it until you stumble upon old puppy pictures.
What is The Process For Reserving a Mi-Ki Puppy?
We require a $500 non-refundable deposit to reserve a puppy. The deposit is applied toward the purchase price of your puppy. A puppy is not considered "sold" without a deposit. Good intentions are nice, but it's when we receive a deposit that we know you are serious about adopting a puppy. The "non-refundable" deposit is refundable under our 100% Money Back Guarantee. Our Money Back Guarantee states that within the first 10 days of receiving your pup, it doesn't meet your every expectation, you may return it, in the same healthy condition, no questions asked, for a full refund of the purchase price of the dog (including the non-refundable deposit).
Are your Mi-Kis Hearts Certified and Registered?
Yes. We are one of the very, very FEW breeders in ALL the Mi-Ki registries out there who have their breeding Mi-Kis Hearts certified with the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA). They are checked by a board certified canine cardiologist and registered with the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. We also have their patellas (knee caps) OFA'd.
Do you CERF test your dogs eyes?
Yes. also have our breeding dogs eyes checked by a Canine Ophthalmologist and registered with the Canine Eye Registration Foundation(CERF). Most breeders have their regular vet look at their dogs' eyes and listen to their hearts, but try to make you think they're CERF'd. An ophthalmic examination using an ophthalmoscopy and biomicroscopy is required to examine and register a dog's eyes with the Canine Eye Registration Foundation. A regular DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) is not qualified to do it. It must be performed by a board certified canine ophthalmologist.
Do you register your dogs with Mi-Ki ONLY registries?
Yes. Our breeding dogs are registered with American Mi-Ki Registry Association (AMRA) and are health screened for over 30 genetically inherited canine diseases. This is done via the DNA lab that AMRA uses. Most of our breeding dogs are dual registered with both AMRA and Mi-Ki Club of America (MCOA). Both registries are STRICTLY Mi-Ki registries. That's KEY when wanting to purchase a genuine, purebred Mi-Ki dog. This answer may become irrelevant once the breed is recognized by AKC.
What Kind of Payment Do You Accept?
We accept Cash, Money Orders, Cashiers Checks, QuickPay through Chase Bank and Credit Cards through Paypal. There is a 3% fee for using Paypal. For example: A $500 charge on your credit card through Paypal would cost an additional $15.00.
At What Age Will My Puppy Be Ready To Leave?
We usually let our Mi-Ki pups go at 10 weeks, providing they are eating well on their own.
Will My Puppy Be Vaccinated?
Yes. All of our Mi-Ki puppies will have their first and possibly their second in the series of three puppy vaccines depending on their age when they leave our home. We also worm our puppies at 3 and 6 weeks with Safegaurd. Your puppy will also be free of fleas, free of ear mites and freshly groomed.
Will My Puppy Be Vet Checked? If So, What is Checked?
Yes. All our MiKi puppies will be Vet checked before leaving our home. Our Veterinarian will check the heart, lungs, knees (patellas), ears, eyes, teeth, testicles and abdomen. All of our puppies have their dew claws removed between 2 and 5 days old, as well.
Will You Ship My Puppy or Use a Courier?
We don't ship! WE deliver! We personally hand deliver your puppy to you at the airport of your choice for $350. The puppy will fly in the cabin with us and not in cargo. To eliminate the $350 delivery fee, customers have used their Frequent Flyer Miles to fly to us. They have also used their FFM to fly me and the puppy to them. If you are comfortable flying to us, we will meet you at the South Bend, IN, Fort Wayne, IN or either of the Chicago, IL airports. I will never ship a Mi-Ki. I've actually known Mi-Ki puppies to die within the first week after being shipped because the ordeal was so traumatic. Shipping a puppy risks the puppy's life and losing your money. I also do not use couriers because of the numerous breeders that the couriers deliver for. All breeders are not created equal and many puppies are sent with ear mites and other diseases/virus' that could infect my puppy. Secondly, a courier will not care for my puppy like I would. Remember... your puppy is MY baby before it is yours. Too many breeders care only about their bottom line, even at the risk of their puppies health and well being.
Do You Require a Spay/Neuter Contract?
Yes. We do require that you spay/neuter your Mi-Ki. Unless a breeding/show contract arrangements were made with us. If spay or neutering is a requirement of the contract, we keep the registration papers until the puppy buyer provides proof of spay/neutering from their vet. We sell additions to your family. We do not sell puppies to pet stores, puppy brokers, or puppy mills.
What Supplies Will I Need For My New Puppy?
You may want to buy a small crate/bed, exercise pen aka: Ex-pen, food bowls, Nutri Source Small Breed puppy food, a metal comb, Pure Paws shampoo & conditioner and an artificial grass doggie litter box system i.e. Rascal Dog litter Box or Potty Park. Similar items can be found at most pet stores like Pet Smart, Petco, Pet Supplies Plus and even Walmart. Your puppy dog will come with a record of their vaccines/dewormings, the written Health contract, Purchase agreement, a piece of artificial grass (their portable doggy toilet), a couple wee wee pads, a blanket with momma and litter mates' scent, a toothbrush, a toy, Natural Balance dog food treat,
t-shirt, dress or coat, doggie bag or puppy purse
What Kind of Registration Papers will
My Puppy Have?
All of our Mi-Ki puppies & adults are registered through the American Mi-Ki Registry Association or Mi-Ki Club of America. Some of our adult dogs are dual registered with AMRA and MCOA (Mi-Ki Club of America). We NEVER register our dogs or puppies with generic or ALL BREED registries. We only use registries that are exclusive to Mi-Kis. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT WHEN ADOPTING A MI-KI PUPPY and should be your #1 question to a prospective breeder. Ask the breeder who the PUPPY is registered with. That is MORE important than where the sire and dam are registered. If the registry name does NOT have the word Mi-Ki in it, thank them for their time and run the other direction. There are enough MI-KI registries available to Mi-Ki breeders that there is NO good reason a breeder "doing the best" for the breed would not have their rare breed dog in a registry exclusive to their breed. The Mi-Ki registries collect data regarding health issues, size of puppies and dogs registered, who the sire and dams are. They keep records on the number of Mi-Kis in the world, how many in each state etc.. The information collected is critical to the Mi-Kis becoming AKC in the future.
"Generic" or ALL breed registries do not collect anything except your money. They don't know who your Mi-Kis great, great, great grand sire is and frankly, they don't care. You give them your money, they give you a paper that states that your dog is whatever breed you say it is. They do not collect DNA, require a breeder to prove parentage or care how healthy your dog is. This is why a registry exclusive to the Mi-Ki breed is so important. Making certain that the Mi-Ki you buy is registered with a Mi-Ki ONLY registry could keep you from buying a Mi-Ki "look alike" and being very disappointed. PLEASE DO NOT BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ ON A WEBSITE. PLEASE DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Don't allow yourself to be taken.
Are Your Mi-Ki Puppies DNA Verified?
ABSOLUTELY Yes! All of our Mi-Ki puppies and adults are DNA'd. There are two types of DNA tests you may read about, DNA Heritage and DNA parent verification.
1) DNA through UKC (United Kennel Club) or the AMRA lab is the DNA that can verify the parents of a puppy. DNA from AMRA's lab will list the sire and dam of the puppy. A DNA-VIP certificate from UKC means that they have both parents' DNA on file.
2) A DNA Heritage test from Mars Veterinary is designed to reveal the ancestry of a mixed breed dog. It lets you know what breeds are in your dog or if your dog is a purebred. The test is called the Wisdom Panel test. If a dog is mixed, it shows which breeds are in the dog and if the breed detected makes up a Minor, Intermediate or Significant part of the dogs heritage. There are over 300+ breeds that can be identified through this test. The Mi-Ki is one of the breeds that can be detected. The Wisdom Panel Insight test can detect 185 breeds via a DNA cheek swab. The Mi-Ki along with 225 other breeds need to be taken via the Wisdom Panel Professional test. This requires a vet taking a blood sample. If you purchased a Mi-Ki, The test results should come back as Mi-Ki ONLY. No other breeds should be under Minor, Intermediate or Significant. If there is, then you do not have a purebred Mi-Ki, but a Mi-Ki mix.
Don't allow yourself to be deceived. If the price sounds too good to be true... there's likely a reason. The bitterness of not getting what you THOUGHT you were buying lingers long after the sweetness of the low price is forgotten... Also, just because a breeder charges a lot for their Mi-Ki puppy doesn't mean it is a genuine Mi-Ki either.
Be very careful when buying from a breeder who has more than one breed, accidents DO happen and unless they DNA-VIP their puppies, you are not guaranteed a genuine Mi-Ki. However, if you think a puppy is cute and you don't care if it acts like a Mi-Ki or grows up to look like a Mi-Ki, then none of this DNA stuff matters.
If I Meet You Half Way, Is There a Delivery Charge?
I will drive two hours in any direction to deliver your puppy at no charge. Every hour after that is $50. If you live five hours away, you drive three hours and I drive two, there is no charge for delivery. If I drive all five hours, the charge is $150. The delivery charge is not quoted in the price of the puppy. It is in addition to the price of the puppy, if delivery is necessary.
What kind of dog food should I buy for my puppy?
Our dogs prefer Nutri Source & Taste of the Wild (grain free), but we've used Wellness, Ultra-Nutro, Natural Balance, Eagle Pack (Holistic), Halo, Pet Promise, California Natural, Solid Gold, B.G. (Before Grain) and Canidae, are just a few quality foods that we've tried. Nutri Source is a super premium, high quality dog food. We purchase the kibble for Small/Medium breed puppy. Some of the food mentioned above are organic/holistic, which is the best of the best. If you decide to change food, do it gradually. Add a little of the new brand of kibble to the old. Do it over a seven day period mixing more of the new brand each day. This will likely prevent any digestive upsets. We “free feed” our dogs. This means food is available to them 24/7. They eat whenever they’re hungry. We've never had a problem with our dogs overeating or gaining weight from free feeding.
What is Hypoglycemia and What Symptoms Should I Watch For?
We at So Fine have never had a problem with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) in our dogs or puppies. However, many toy breed puppies and adult dogs are prone to Hypoglycemia because of their tiny size and high metabolism. Symptoms to watch for are a limp or lethargic puppy and grayish-blue tongue or gums. If the gums and or tongue are not pink, that's a good indication that you have a problem. Immediately give the puppy Nutri-Cal OR put Kayro syrup on the puppies tongue. Hypoglycemia can be triggered if your puppy is sick, stressed, plays hard or doesn't eat well. I recommend offering water with Kayro syrup in it when you get your puppy. When the puppy is completely acclimated to his new environment, sugar water isn't necessary, unless the puppy isn't a good eater. We give Natural Balance dog food roll (smells & looks like summer sausage) in SMALL increments, as a treat, through out the day. This also can help to stimulate your dogs appetite and prevent Hypoglycemia.
What does your 3 yr. written Health Guarantee cover?
You will receive a healthy puppy from us. However, if a life threatening genetic disease is discovered in the first three years of your puppy's life, we will replace the puppy or refund your money. You will get this in writing at the time of adopting your baby. BEWARE of very short health guarantees. It always makes me wonder why a puppy would only be guaranteed for six months.
How can I know my puppy is a Genuine Mi-Ki?
If it's the unique Mi-Ki qualities and characteristics that attracted you to this rare breed, then you MUST work with a reputable breeder. One who DNA's their breeding stock AND PUPPIES. #1 question to ask a Mi-Ki breeder "Which Mi-Ki registry will my PUPPY be registered with? Don't worry about the parents of your puppy because for a puppy to be registered with a Mi-Ki registry, the parents would have had to be. If the PUPPY is NOT registered with a Mi-Ki (only) registry, then move on to the next breeder. (You can tell if a registry is exclusive to the Mi-Ki breed when the word Mi-Ki is in the name of the registry. For example, American Mi-Ki Registration Association and Mi-Ki Club of America. If a breeder throws out an acronym, don't be intimidated, ask them what it means.
For example, NCA means National Canine Association, CKC is Continental Kennel Club, APR and APRI is All Pet Registry Inc.
The following is a Q & A on All Pet Registry, Inc's Frequently Asked Questions website page. APRI's Question: How can I register my puppy? APRI's Answer: If your dog has puppies you will need to fill out a litter application to get registration applications for your puppies. This can be done online if you own the male and female and both are APRI registered. Otherwise, you can download the litter application OR call us and we'll mail you a registration form for each puppy in the litter to give to the new puppy owners. Bottom line, anyone can register a puppy with All Pet Registry Inc., hence the name.
